Trade Show Exhibit Display Types & Regulations

Need help determining how large your booth can be? Get the essential details on standard exhibit types and regulations to ensure a smooth and compliant trade show experience.

Standard Exhibit Display Types

At Vivid Exhibits, we work with four primary booth configurations: Linear, Perimeter, Peninsula, and Island. Before your next event, always review the show’s specific manual, as regulations vary by venue and event. If you have questions about compliance, consulting show management is highly recommended.

Booth Types & Guidelines

Linear Booths

Also known as in-line booths, these are arranged in a straight line with neighboring exhibitors on either side. Typically, only the front side faces the aisle. A corner booth variation allows for two open sides.

  • Standard size: 10’ x 10’ (3.05m x 3.05m)
  • Maximum height: 8’ (which can extend along the sidewall up to 5’ from the front aisle)
  • Hanging signs are not permitted in North America

Perimeter Booths

Exposed to three aisles, peninsula booths consist of at least four connected booths.

Two types:

  1. Back-to-linear-booths – Back wall height: 4' within 5’ of side aisles; center height: 16'–20'
  2. Split-island booths (backs to another peninsula booth) – Maximum height: 16'–20' throughout
  • Back wall must be finished with no logos or branding facing other booths

Peninsula Booths

Exposed to three aisles, peninsula booths consist of at least four connected booths.

Two types:

  1. Back-to-linear-booths – Back wall height: 4' within 5’ of side aisles; center height: 16'–20'
  2. Split-island booths (backs to another peninsula booth) – Maximum height: 16'–20' throughout
  • Back wall must be finished with no logos or branding facing other booths

Island Booths

Surrounded by aisles on all four sides, island booths offer maximum visibility and design flexibility.

  • Typically 20’ x 20’ or larger
  • Maximum height: 16'–20' (varies by venue)
  • Hanging signs are permitted

Additional Considerations

  • Multi-level booths may be allowed depending on the venue
  • Canopies & ceilings must comply with visibility and fire regulations
  • Hanging signs are generally permitted in peninsula and island booths but require pre-approval
  • Lighting must stay within booth boundaries and face inward
