About Walter E. Washington Convention Center
The Walter E. Washington Convention Center is the largest building in Washington, D.C., spanning 2.3 million square feet across 15 acres (8 city blocks) in the heart of downtown. Named in 2006 in honor of the city’s first home rule mayor (1967-1979), the center opened in 2003 and serves as the District’s premier convention and events facility, operated by Events DC. The facility features over 703,000 square feet of exhibition space, 198,000 square feet of meeting space with 77 breakout rooms, and the largest ballroom in the region at 52,000 square feet. The center is one of only four convention centers in the U.S. to achieve LEED Platinum certification and the first in the world to earn the WELL Health-Safety Rating (2022).
